By any other name
Nov. 21st, 2020 06:32 pmIt sometimes feels like writers put more thought into characters name than parents-to-be do.
Writers look into meanings, themes, genres, age, country of origin. Is it a family name? What does it mean? Is it pretentious? Is it not pretentious enough? Is the name gay enough? Can it be used as a metaphor? What position was the planet to the stars?
Of course, you then still sometimes end up with a character in a book named Wolfy McWolf-face, and we're supposed to be surprised when they turn out to be a werewolf.
I know name meanings aren't necessarily a huge thing in our culture but sometimes I look at the meanings of the names my parents threw together for me and wonder what - if anything - were they thinking
Rowan means little red one. I will give them this one - I am short with red hair. It's also a name relation to my maternal grandfather's name, Ruadh and is a nod to my mother's Irish descent
Veronica is a Latin alteration of Berenice, which in turn is the Latinized form of Βερενίκη (Berenike), the Macedonian form of the Greek name Φερενίκη (Pherenike), which means bringing victory
Daisy is the flower and symbolizes childbirth, motherhood, and new beginnings
My last name means on the hill
So I'm a little red one bringing victory, leading to a new beginning on the hill.
When I write it out like that, part of me thinks it sounds kind of cool. I feel a little like a character in an urban fantasy series, however my parents have said they didn't consider the meanings, just picked family names/names they liked
